Business owners in Uyo the capital city of Akwa Ibom State wake up to meet their plight as men of the Akwa Ibom State Environmental and Waste Management Agency (AKSEPWMA) were seen demolishing their shops and kiosk.
It could be recalled that AKSEPWMA are on a mission of cleaning up the city of Uyo from illegal trading and building of shops.
Although the government had earlier issued a notice to occupants of the shops to vacate the premises before they raided the premises but store owners were seen lamenting and crying saying they had no prior notice.
One of the store owners along Ikot Ekpene road who pleaded anonymous told our reporter that they had no notice from the government, saying the government took them unaware, that She has no place to go and start her business.
Another victim told our source that she is been taken unaware, that the government did not notify any of them in Itam Market, she cried bitterly saying that’s her only source of income.
However, one of the agents from AKSEPWMA told our reporter that the government had announced to all illegal business owners operating in the city of Uyo to vacate the premises before the incident.
He said “we’re working under the directives of the state government, the governor told us to demolish all illegally erected stores along the road side in the entire Uyo city,” We started at the Ibom Plaza, and we warned other business owners to vacate any illegal trading along the roadside in Uyo.”
When asked him if the government has provided a place for them to establish their business, he said the government has provided many legal places like the Itam Market, the Ibom Plaza and other markets for anyone who wants to do business in Uyo to stay comfortably.
Meanwhile, some men and women were seen protesting over the sad development, it still remains unbelievable to some of them as that remains their only source of income.
Nevertheless, the affected persons pleaded with the government to compensate them, saying most of them solely depend on the business.
